PSA centering standards: front, back and grade requirements

PSA centering requirements compare the printed borders on the front and back separately. This page turns the current model into a grade-by-grade reference, explains the top-to-bottom question and shows how a good reverse can still leave the front as the limiting face. It is a centering screen, not a forecast of the grade on a holder.

What does PSA 10 require on the front and back?

The front limit in Centering Lab is 55/45; the reverse limit is 75/25. Both horizontal and vertical ratios must pass their face's limit. The official PSA grading standards, consulted on 2 October 2026, describe those tolerances approximately and reserve discretion based on overall eye appeal. A measurement at a boundary therefore does not settle a submission.

Older articles sometimes associate 60/40 with PSA 10. Use the current threshold above rather than a remembered screenshot or a different grader's rule. The model's numerical bands were verified on 2026-10-01; the consultation date describes this article's source check, not an independent revalidation of every lower band.

Bands are intentionally incomplete where numerical evidence is missing. Do not interpolate unlisted grades. Status applies to each row, not just to the house.

Every whole or half grade on the PSA scale is represented except 9.5, which is not a PSA grade. A dash means that no separate numerical band exists in this model for that row and face. It does not mean zero tolerance or a perfect border. The engine uses its published bands rather than interpolating new thresholds between grades. Half grades also depend on condition; this calculator cannot award them by splitting a ratio interval.

Does top-to-bottom centering matter as much as left-to-right?

Keep the axes separate. At 50/50 horizontally and 60/40 vertically the front ceiling is 9 MINT; averaging the two would hide the vertical problem. Swapping the axes gives the same ceiling. The PSA terminology reference illustrates horizontal and vertical ratios independently.

For a slanted printed frame, measure several positions along each straight edge and retain the most off-center reading in the tool. This is Centering Lab's conservative measuring method; the official page does not disclose a pixel-sampling algorithm. The physical cut is the outside boundary; the printed frame is the inside boundary. Neither a sleeve nor an artwork box is a substitute for either line.

How can the back change a PSA centering ceiling?

A front with both axes at 55/45 has ceiling 10 GEM MT. A reverse at 85/15 horizontally and 50/50 vertically has ceiling 9 MINT. Evaluate the two faces first, then use the lower ceiling. A centered reverse cannot compensate for an off-center front, and a generous reverse allowance does not extend the front allowance.

Photograph each face squarely with four corners visible. Confirm the cut before the printed borders and keep the two photos associated with the same card. An image inside a holder can conceal part of the margin; if you cannot see the true cut, report that limitation rather than claiming a precise result. See the front-and-back walkthrough.

Which mistakes make a PSA centering check unreliable?

Do not divide a border by the whole card width: divide the wider border by the sum of its two opposing borders. White specks, wear and print dots concern condition, not the position of the frame. Avoid measuring around rounded corners, where the outside edge changes shape. Use diffuse light and enough resolution to place the lines without guessing.

The tool rounds ratios before its band comparison; that is a software convention, not a PSA promise. Keep the unrounded measurement and its uncertainty when close to a limit. If a full-art design has no measurable frame, measure the reverse and describe the front as unresolved. Compare the four-house hub and use the measurement guide for the capture steps.

Frequently asked questions

What are the current PSA 10 centering standards?

The model uses 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the back. Passing these limits screens centering only; it does not promise PSA 10.

Can a 60/40 front get a PSA 10 centering ceiling?

With both front axes at 60/40 the model returns 9 MINT. Do not treat grader discretion as a larger guaranteed tolerance.

What is PSA's top-to-bottom centering tolerance?

The same front limit applies vertically and horizontally. Each reverse axis uses the reverse limit; do not average the two axes.

Does PSA use a different centering ratio on the back?

Yes. The top modeled reverse band allows 75/25. That allowance does not change the front requirements.

Which sources and limits does this guide use?

Tables are generated from the same data source as the tool. Threshold verification: 2026-10-01. Centering standards · How it works.

official = published numerical rule; interpreted = model interpretation; approximate = working estimate. retrieved = source retrieved; unavailable = not accessible; brief-only = supplied reference without direct retrieval. Individual band status is shown in the standards: the house-level status does not replace each row's status.
