SGC centering standards: front, back and grade requirements
Centering Lab · Published and updated:
SGC distinguishes 10 Pristine and 10 Gem Mint, but the centering calculator does not have a directly verified complete SGC numerical rubric. This page makes that gap visible: a useful front comparison is possible, while an unknown reverse must remain unknown.
How do SGC 10 Pristine and Gem Mint differ?
The indexed official SGC scale, consulted on 2 October 2026, describes perfect centering for Pristine. The direct page did not expose a complete readable scale during this check. Centering Lab uses 52/48 as its practical perfect-centering convention, with approximate status for SGC. This is not an official allowance above perfect centering.
The modeled Gem Mint front band uses 55/45. At 55/45 on both axes the front ceiling is 10 Gem Mint; at 50/50 on both it is 10 Pristine. The label distinction also concerns the card's overall condition, which this tool does not inspect.

Bands are intentionally incomplete where numerical evidence is missing. Do not interpolate unlisted grades. Status applies to each row, not just to the house.
The front ratios come entirely from the approximate model, verified on 2026-10-01 with a supplied secondary reference rather than direct retrieval of the complete official scale. Empty grades are not filled by interpolation. Even where a ratio looks similar to another house's limit, that similarity is not evidence of an official SGC rule.
What does a dash in the SGC back column mean?
Every reverse entry is unmodeled. It does not mean SGC accepts any reverse, ignores the back or guarantees the front ceiling. Measuring the reverse still records its horizontal and vertical ratios; the engine simply cannot translate them into an independently evidenced SGC ceiling.
For example, the checker cannot assign a separate SGC reverse ceiling to 85/15 and 50/50. Its combined display remains constrained by the front only. Report that omission alongside the result, and consult SGC about the exact card rather than borrowing PSA's back allowance.
How should you measure sports and TCG cards for SGC?
Choose a continuous printed frame specific to the issue. On a traditional sports front, the photograph's outer frame may be clear; a nameplate, team emblem or intentionally uneven lower caption is not automatically a centered rectangle. For a TCG, artwork crossing a frame also does not define the cut. Compare the same treatment before placing inside lines.
Photograph the front and reverse squarely with four visible corners. Measure both axes outside rounded corners; preserve the worst reading along a slanted frame. Do not average a poor vertical axis with a centered horizontal one. At 60/40 and 50/50 the modeled front ceiling is 9 Mint, irrespective of which axis is wider.
Which conclusions should an SGC check avoid?
Do not call approximate ratios official requirements, predict a final label from centering or infer that a reverse passes because the table is empty. Keep placement uncertainty when close to a limit. Gloss, refractor lines, corner wear and authenticity require separate inspection.
The standards hub keeps SGC next to the other models with status labels. The measurement guide explains reproducible border placement, and the front/back guide explains why a missing reverse model differs from a generous known reverse tolerance.
Frequently asked questions
What are the SGC centering standards for a 10?
The approximate model uses 55/45 for Gem Mint and 52/48 for Pristine on the front. These are not a directly verified full official rubric.
Does SGC have a separate back centering tolerance here?
No numerical reverse bands exist in this model. That is missing evidence, not proof that SGC ignores the reverse.
Is SGC Pristine 10 the same as Gem Mint 10?
No. They are distinct labels. The model's practical perfect-centering convention cannot establish the official Pristine label.
Can I apply PSA's reverse requirements to SGC?
No. A rule from another house does not fill SGC's missing back model. Retain the measurement and seek an issue-specific assessment.
Which sources and limits does this guide use?
Tables are generated from the same data source as the tool. Threshold verification: 2026-10-01. Centering standards · How it works.
- PSA: official · retrieved
- BGS: interpreted · unavailable
- CGC: interpreted · retrieved
- SGC: approximate · brief-only · secondary reference
official = published numerical rule; interpreted = model interpretation; approximate = working estimate. retrieved = source retrieved; unavailable = not accessible; brief-only = supplied reference without direct retrieval. Individual band status is shown in the standards: the house-level status does not replace each row's status.
